Adventurous Activities on Lake Atitlán

Although we do love relaxing in the sun – there is plenty to do for thrill-seekers on Lake Atitlan. From volcanoes to cliffs and beyond – the lake is the perfect spot for the adventurer.

Don’t believe us? Check out some of our favorite daring lake activities.

Paddleboarding & Kayaking
Don’t underestimate how much fun a day of SUP boarding or kayaking can be. The lake is absolutely huge and there are so many gorgeous parts to explore. Depending on your experience level you can even paddle over to other towns for an afternoon.

Just be mindful, the lake is temperamental and can get very choppy in the afternoon. Try to do your exploring early in the day and stay relatively close to land in case the winds change.

Want to try it out for a couple of hours? We offer unlimited use of our SUP’s and kayaks to all guests at Free Cerveza. Alternatively, if you’re interested in a tour then you can click here.

Rostro Maya
You can access the mind-blowing Rostro Maya hike from San Pedro. This mountain peak is around 2,863 meters tall and overlooks the entire lake.
Find a tour guide to take you up bright and early so you can reach the peak before dawn. Then sit back and enjoy the unbelievable sunrise views.

Cliff Jump
Obsessed with heights? San Marcos is calling your name! Venture into their nature reserve and pluck up the courage to jump off of a 10-meter high cliff right into the lake. Entry cost into the reserve is usually around Q15 and you can hang out there all day, jumping or swimming off of their rugged coastline.

Atitlan Volcano
Hike up to the utmost peak of the lake, the Atitlan Volcano. There may not be straight-on views of an active volcano when you arrive at the top, but instead, you can take in panoramic views of the entire country!

Hike up in the morning, set up camp, and come down the next day. Just be warned, some have reported this hike to be even harder than the Acatenango trip – so be prepared for a few days of muscle recovery.

Paragliding
This one is for the real wild ones. Ever imagined yourself jumping off a cliff and flying? Well, now you can turn those dreams into reality. Our friends at Realworld Paragliding can take you on the flight of a lifetime departing from Panajachel and soaring over that gorgeous blue lake.

Depending on what your cup of tea is, they can even design a custom tour just for you!
